Collectors: 3 Ways to Identify Black Stones

Do you ever look at your collection and think, what is this?

As a crystal collector and gemstone jewelry designer for Quinn’s Crystals, I have a hard time distinguishing between some stones in my collection, especially those of the black polished variety. I have found two great articles from Hibiscus Moon and Ashley Leavy, two crystal healing experts, on how to identify black crystals.

In the first article “How to Tell the Difference Between Black Onyx, Jet, Apache Tear, Black Tourmaline & Black Obsidian” by Hibiscus Moon of Hibiscus Moon Crystal Academy examines the physical distinctions between black stones. She divides them into organic (Jet, Apache Tear, Black Obsidian) and non-organic aka minerals (Black Onyx, Black Tourmaline). Next she looks at the weight, luster, patterns and clarity properties of the stones.

The second article, “How To ID Your Crystals When They All Look The Same” by Ashley Leavy of Love & Light School of Crystal Therapy, also examines the properties of black stone. In additional to those covered by the first article, Ashley as looks at Shungite and Black Tektite. For those who prefer videos, she includes a youtube clip with descriptions and photos with her article.

Drawing on these two articles and my experience in collecting, I would recommend taking the 3 following actions to identify black stones:

  • Create a Catalog –avoid needing to identify by taking a picture or labeling your collection as soon as you by it.
  • Distinguish Characteristics -is it waxy or shiny? Smooth or crystal matrix?
  • Compare Properties- look at existing stones you are familiar with or compare to photos or descriptions from online experts to identify.

Starting today, identify and organize your stones, relax and enjoy your collection.
